In his traditional spring speech, Sweden Democrat Party leader Jimmie Åkesson proclaimed that Swedishness is not in the color of the skin - but in completely different things.
Every year, the Sweden Democrats organize an activity at Långholmen in Stockholm where, among others, the party leader Jimmie Åkesson gives its spring speech. This year it took place on Saturday, May 2.
”Swedishness is not in the color of your skin”
In his speech, Åkesson explained what he and his party thought about ”Swedishness” and what it really means to be Swedish. One thing is clear: it has nothing to do with ethnicity anymore.
Åkesson says verbatim that ”Swedishness is not in the color of your skin” but instead means that to be Swedish is to adopt a Swedish identity consisting of culture, norms, values, customs and habits.
Furthermore, Åkesson reiterates the SD's line on open Swedishness. ”Swedishness is open and welcoming to those who want to, who make an effort and who show respect”. That is, if an immigrant from Somalia makes enough effort, that person is also Swedish.
SD's open Swedishness has been widely criticized
SD has not always stood for ”open Swedishness”, before the SD top Mattias Karlsson took over as chief ideologist, the SD recognized Swedes as a unique ethnic group.
But now the party believes that everyone can become Swedish, that it's really just a question of values, culture, language and citizenship.
But this has not gone unnoticed. Many have criticized the SD's position, saying that ”open Swedishness” actually denies the existence of Swedes as a unique ethnic group because anyone can become a Swede.

Instead, SD seems to want to stop the exchange of Swedish values. And that is a huge difference. To even discuss who is Swedish is a political low water mark. I myself have lived abroad for over 20 years, worked, paid taxes and speak the language.
