Busch rages against EU Commissioner: ”We are being punished by the EU”

The row between Sweden and the EU over the Swedish electricity billions is escalating. Energy Minister Ebba Busch is now launching a fierce attack on the EU Energy Commissioner following new demands from Brussels.

The row between Sweden and the EU over Swedish bottleneck revenues escalates further. I SVT's Agenda targeted energy ministers Ebba Busch (KD) sharp criticism of EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen following the announcement that the EU wants to limit how Sweden can use the billions from the electricity system.

The conflict is about the so-called bottleneck revenues, money that arises when electricity is sold between areas with different electricity prices. The government wants to be able to use the money for electricity subsidies, expansion of electricity networks and new nuclear power. The European Commission, on the other hand, believes that the money should mainly be used for grid interconnections and the green transition.

– I want full freedom for Swedish electricity money, says Busch in Agenda.

”Absolutely absurd”

EU Energy Commissioner Jørgensen tells SVT that the legislation is already clear on how the money should be used.

– It is not about long-term energy production facilities such as nuclear power plants, but rather about ensuring interconnectivity and a rational energy system, he says.

He also says the EU needs to speed up the transition to clean energy and that this requires larger and more interconnected electricity grids. Busch responds with harsh words.

- It is absolutely absurd that Dan Jørgensen, who when he wanted to be elected as Commissioner said that we should not get stuck in the ”Brussels bubble” and that we need to deliver concrete results for the EU.

”Swedish households are not earning”

Dan Jørgensen emphasizes that Sweden benefits from exporting electricity to Europe and that an interconnected electricity system will eventually lead to lower prices. Busch dismisses this argument.

- I find it absolutely hair-raising that he says that we earn a lot from selling electricity; it is private companies that earn. Swedish households and Swedish companies in general do not. We are currently being punished by the EU.

Earlier this week, the government announced that work on a new electricity cable to Denmark will be paused until the conflict with the EU is resolved.
