Ex-NATO chief: ”NATO is being torn apart”

Former NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen now openly warns that the wartime alliance is breaking up. At the same time, he calls for a new European military alliance with increased arms spending and rapid rearmament.

In an interview with The world describes Anders Fogh Rasmussen situation within NATO as urgent. He says that Donald Trump's criticism of the alliance and the uncertainty surrounding US defence guarantees have shaken the whole organization.

– What we are witnessing right now is the disintegration of NATO, and it is dangerous, he says.

The statement comes from a person who for many years has been one of the Alliance's most high-profile representatives. Rasmussen has previously defended the US military line and supported wars like the invasion of Iraq.

Instead, he describes how Europe must prepare for a situation where NATO no longer functions as before.

Want to build new military alliance

In response to the crisis, Rasmussen wants to create a new European defense alliance alongside NATO. He proposes a “coalition of the willing” that would be able to rapidly equip and conduct military operations without member states blocking decisions.

– NATO countries that meet the 5% defense spending target will be able to participate, he says.

He also calls for a model whereby member states could be excluded if they do not comply. At the same time, he wants Ukraine to join the new alliance and for Europe's production of arms and ammunition to increase significantly.

This means that the answer to NATO's crisis, according to Rasmussen, is even greater military build-up and closer European coordination.

Growing cracks in NATO

At the same time, the interview shows how deep the rifts within NATO have become. When a former Secretary General openly talks about “disintegration” and the need for a new alliance, it points to how quickly the situation has changed.

For a long time, NATO has been described as stable and united. Now, new alliances, European defense structures and how the continent will cope without full American support are being discussed.

What was previously dismissed as unthinkable is now being openly discussed at the highest level within the Alliance's own circles.
