Finland is exploring new ways to encourage more young people to start families and have children. Now, the Population Association is proposing that every newborn child receive a government startup grant of 5,000 euros in a special ”baby fund.” The idea is that the money will grow over time and can be used when the child becomes a parent in the future.
The background is that Finland, like much of Europe, is grappling with record-low birth rates and an aging population. The proposal is presented as a long-term effort to bolster confidence in the future and make it easier for young people to take the plunge and start a family earlier in life.
