NATO is moving forward with the purchase of up to ten GlobalEye surveillance aircraft from Saab. The decision comes at a time of sharply rising defense budgets in Europe and strengthens the Swedish defense conglomerate’s position—and thus the value of its largest shareholders’ holdings.
The announcement was made during the NATO summit in Turkey's capital, Ankara, where the Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that the military alliance intends to replace its current AWACS aircraft with Saab’s GlobalEye. Formal contract negotiations are now beginning, and the first deliveries are expected starting in 2030. This was announced at a press conference including, among others, the prime minister Ulf Kristersson in Ankara.
