NATO Deployment: 200 French Soldiers to Boden

About 200 French soldiers are to be deployed as part of the NATO force based in Boden. The announcement comes just weeks before a new law takes effect that makes it easier for foreign allied forces to operate on Swedish territory and grants the government expanded authority to make military decisions without requiring new parliamentary approval in each individual case.

France is now joining the Swedish-led NATO force FLF Finland. According to SVT, the force consists of about 200 soldiers on a rotational basis, with Boden as its main base and Rovaniemi as its command center.

In a joint statement France, Sweden, and Finland state:

”France’s participation in FLF Finland is a clear expression of our shared commitment to a stronger Europe within a stronger NATO.”

New Law Paves the Way for More Foreign Military Activities

On August 1, the Act on Improved Conditions for Operational Military Cooperation will take effect. It grants the government expanded authority to authorize NATO and EU countries to carry out military defense measures on Swedish territory for the purposes of deterrence and defense. The Act also means that foreign military personnel may be granted authority to guard protected sites and maintain order within their own units.

There is no evidence that the French troop deployment is a direct result of the new law. However, the troop presence is an example of the type of activity that the legislation is intended to facilitate as part of Sweden’s alignment with NATO.

Local issues are still awaiting answers

At the same time, there is still no word on how extensive the foreign presence will be in the long run.

”Yes, now we in Boden need more details—is it 150 or 300? Are they here permanently or just for a few weeks at a time? Are families coming? Etc. The government needs to step up here, and 25 million kronor for total defense in Boden isn’t enough to secure the water supply.”, writes the resident of Boden Johan on X.

The government has not yet announced how long the French force will remain in Boden or how extensive its permanent presence might be.
