Norway's Vikings shocked the world—knocking out Brazil

Norway’s “Vikings” continue to make World Cup history. After drawing significant attention with their Viking theme leading up to the tournament, they have now defeated Brazil 2–1—and the world is taking notice.

Erling Haaland became a hero with two goals as Norway defeated Brazil and advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals. The victory is described as one of the greatest in Norwegian soccer history.

The Vikings Continue to Win

Ahead of the World Cup, Norway's national team attracted international attention by lift showcasing the country’s Viking heritage in team imagery and marketing. The initiative was criticized by a small group of cultural commentators, but following the victory over Brazil, many have instead praised the team for staying true to its national identity.

On social media, many point out that Norway not only represents its country on the field but also openly displays pride in its history and culture. According to them, this success shows that a national team does not have to be multicultural to compete with the world’s best. When Sweden defeated Tunisia, several prominent figures in the mainstream media took the opportunity to champion multiculturalism, claiming that the national team reflected how multiculturalism ”should work” in Sweden.

The fact that a relatively homogeneous team like Norway still managed to defeat Brazil—which has long been regarded as a formidable opponent in soccer—shows that multiculturalism is not necessarily a guarantee of success.

Haaland: ”The Pride of Playing for Norway”

After the match, Haaland emphasized the importance of the national team, according to reports from, among others, The Way of the World.

– The pride of playing for Norway is something we should nurture. You can see that Brazil is willing to give it their all for the jersey. They’ve dreamed of playing for Brazil since they were little. … I hope that all the young people watching this interview will realize that playing for Norway is one of the proudest things they can do in life., he said.

Even Aftonbladet's Erik Niva described the victory as something greater than just a soccer game and wrote that the players had ”erected a new Norwegian national monument” and that Norway is now ”the country with the most natural sense of community and the strongest sense of belonging.”.
