The government is moving forward with new rules designed to make it easier for labor migrants to stay and change jobs in Sweden. At the same time, the proposal raises questions about how it fits in with the promise of a paradigm shift in migration policy.
The government has sent a legislative referral with several proposals aimed at making things easier for labor migrants. Among other things, work permits will no longer be tied to a specific employer. Those who change jobs will no longer need to apply for a new work permit, but will simply need to report the change to the Swedish Migration Agency. In addition, the proposal calls for a longer period to find a new job in the event of unemployment—up to six months after two years in Sweden.
Minister for Migration Johan Forssell justifies the changes by saying that Sweden needs to attract more foreign workers.
– I want Sweden to be the best in the EU when it comes to attracting talent and drawing in top international expertise, he says.
A New Path for Immigration
The government describes the changes as a way to reduce red tape and strengthen Sweden’s competitiveness. At the same time, the proposal means that the rules for the main pathway to a residence permit in Sweden will become more generous.
During their term in office, the parties in the coalition have cited the decline in asylum-related immigration as evidence of a ”paradigm shift.” At the same time, they have worked to increase labor immigration. The proposal reinforces this approach by making it easier to remain in the country even when changing employers and by allowing more time to find a new job.
This means that immigration to Sweden will remain high, but under a different name.
Based on an EU directive
The proposal implements a new EU directive on common rules for work permits in the member states. The government cites the directive as the basis for the legislative changes, which are proposed to take effect on February 1, 2027.
At the same time, the proposal raises questions about the government’s policy direction. While the rules for asylum and family-based immigration have been tightened, the government is now proposing to ease restrictions on labor immigration. The promised ”paradigm shift” thus primarily involves redirecting immigration from one channel to another—rather than reducing overall immigration.

After all, almost all of them are already unemployed.
That must be about something else.
This is madness… it’s so ridiculous that I’m starting to suspect some kind of witchcraft, sorcery, or interference from a foreign power… (not Russia, though)
The government and big business are working together to drive down wages, and it doesn't matter whether the reds or the blues are in power, since both of these blocs are doing the globalists' bidding.
Jacob Wallenberg has said that we need more immigrants in Sweden. So it will be just as he says—period.
