These Swedish political parties tried to stop the Sweden Democrats' EU debate on Christian Zedig

The murder of Swedish police officer Christian Zedig became a matter for the European Parliament following an initiative by the Sweden Democrats. At the same time, the voting record shows that three Swedish parties opposed holding the debate at all.

At the initiative of the Sweden Democrats’ ECR parliamentary group, the European Parliament held a special debate on the deadly attacks in Denmark and Italy and their implications for public safety in Europe. The murder of the Swedish police officer Christian Zedig was the focus of the Swedish part of the debate.

For the debate to take place at all, a vote in Parliament was required. Voting Record shows that the proposal passed by a vote of 283 to 142, while the Social Democratic caucus was among those who voted against it. The Social Democrats Heléne Fritzon, Johan Danielsson and Sofie Eriksson, as well as the Green Party’s Alice Bah Kuhnke and Pär Holmgren, as well as the Left Party’s Hanna Gedin were the members who voted against even discussing the issue.

Weimers: ”It could have been me”

When Charlie Weimers took the podium, he described how Zedig, a 32-year-old police officer and father of two, had traveled to Copenhagen for a summer evening with friends. What should have been a pleasant summer evening ended with him being beaten down and brutally stomped on the head by an immigrant with a long criminal record. He used the incident as a starting point to raise questions about Europe’s security and immigration policy.

– It could have been me. A lovely summer evening in Copenhagen. Beer. Friends. The World Cup on a big-screen TV. It’s hard to imagine anything better. That’s how the evening was supposed to be for Christian Zedig, said Weimers.

Weimer then leveled sharp criticism at the red-green parties, arguing that they were not even willing to discuss the trends underlying the growing insecurity in Europe. He specifically pointed to the vote on whether to hold the debate.

– Yet the Social Democrats, the Left, and the Greens voted against even allowing the European Parliament to hold a debate on these attacks and what they mean for security in Europe.

Received support from several sources

Moderate Party Members of the European Parliament Tomas Tobé He also emphasized the link between serious crime and current immigration policy. He stressed that people without the right to reside in Europe should not be allowed to threaten public safety and that the issue is about defending European values.

– People who have no right to be in Europe should not be allowed to threaten our security. Ultimately, this is about defending our European values and our way of life.

The Italian Member of the European Parliament, too, Susanna Ceccardi brought up the murder of Zedig and used the incident to argue for a significantly stricter immigration policy and for more people who do not have the right to remain in Europe to be sent home.

Criticism from the Center Party

The Center Party's Abir Al-Sahlani However, she was uncomfortable discussing how immigration had once again claimed a European life. She tried to shift the focus and attacked Weimer, arguing that an ongoing criminal case should not be ”used for political purposes.” She urged the parliament to let the justice system take its course and to show respect for the deceased and his family.

– Let the justice system do its job. Let’s honor Christian with respect and not use his memory as a political tool.

After the vote, Charlie Weimers posted the voting record on X and highlighted how the various party groups had voted on the debate.

  1. Thank you, Charlie Weimers, for championing the issue of Europeans' safety.

We must NOT let the Demons continue to ruin everything they've done over the past 30 years.
Check the minutes; they speak for themselves.

  2. Thank you, Charlie, and thank you, SD, for a principled speech—for once!!!
How many people must die on the altar of multiculturalism before politicians and the public take action???
And then it says that only those who are staying in Europe/Sweden illegally are supposed to leave???
Why not ALL those who commit crimes, regardless of whether they are citizens or not? The laws must be changed to make this possible!
As long as this drags on in politics, nothing will happen. It’s strange that only the AFS has realized this—that we need to deport at least one and a half million people from Sweden, halt immigration entirely, and reopen the Repatriation Agency. That’s what I call real politics—what do you think in the comments section?
