It’s over! Reinfeldt gives up as chairman of the Swedish Football Association

After months of criticism and resistance, it is now official: Fredrik Reinfeldt will not seek re-election as chairman of the Swedish Football Association (SvFF). This decision comes after he lost his most important ally.

When former Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt was elected chairman of SvFF in 2023, many questioned the decision. A career politician with no deep roots in football suddenly found himself in one of the sport’s most influential positions.

He was a widely disliked politician, notorious for his anti-Swedish statements and for pushing the disastrous mass immigration policies that transformed Sweden.

His tenure reflected that: he immediately faced strong criticism and lacked broad support within the football community.

The Support That Never Came

Ahead of the annual meeting, it became evident that club support was minimal, but Reinfeldt was still hoping the SvFF nomination committee would back him. That did not happen, according to Fotbollskanalen.

Now that the committee has nominated Simon Åström as the new chairman, the message is clear: Reinfeldt has no support left. Rather than fighting an unwinnable battle, he has chosen to step aside.

For many in Swedish football, this is a welcome decision—a leader seen as lacking both passion and understanding of the sport is now stepping down.

“I respect the decision of the nomination committee. I will fulfill my mandate until March 22, at which point I will give a short speech summarizing the past year. I would like to extend my warm thanks to all the staff and others dedicated to Swedish football, with whom I have had the privilege of working. Beyond this, I will not be making any further comments in my capacity as chairman,” said Reinfeldt in a press release, according to Fotbollskanalen.

What’s next for Reinfeldt?

For many, this is good news—a controversial and unpopular leader is leaving, and Swedish football has a chance to move forward. What Reinfeldt does next remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: he is no longer part of Swedish football.
