EU Blocks the Save Europe Act – Campaign Heads to Court

Nearly 600,000 Europeans had already thrown their support behind the Save Europe Act when the European Commission announced that the initiative would not be registered. Now, the campaign leadership refuses to give up—and is preparing a legal counteroffensive.

The European Commission has rejected the application to register Save Europe Act as a European citizens' initiative (European Citizens’ Initiative, ECI). This prevents the campaign from using the EU’s official system to collect the one million valid signatures required for the Commission to formally consider the proposal.

The Commission announced that the initiative does not meet the legal requirements for registration. According to the Commission, parts of the proposal clearly conflict with the EU’s fundamental values and the prohibition against discrimination. The Commission stated that its review concerned the legal admissibility of the initiative—not its political appropriateness.

The nearly 600,000 names the campaign has collected so far are therefore signatures of political support, not formally approved signatures under the EU’s citizens’ initiative system. Such an initiative can begin its official signature collection only after registration.

Outlines the immigration requirements

Among other things, the Save Europe Act aims to halt continued mass immigration from non-Western countries, strengthen the EU’s external borders, and establish a European framework for repatriation.

According to the campaign, the Commission bases its rejection on the grounds that a ban based on ethnic, cultural, or civilizational origin would constitute racial discrimination against third-country nationals.

In a statement on X The organization writes:

”The European Commission has just officially refused to register the Save Europe Act as a citizens” initiative, thereby disregarding the votes of nearly 600,000 European patriots.”

”We’re not going to stop here. We’re going to take action against this decision. The fight continues.”

”See you in court”

One of the organizers, Eva Vlaardingerbroek, reacts by calling the announcement a gross violation of Europeans' democratic rights.

”They claim that wanting to keep Europe European is ’racist’ and contrary to ’European values.’ We will no longer accept this madness. Europe belongs to us. See you in court.”

The campaign states that its lawyers will now challenge the decision in court. At the same time, the petition drive continues outside the EU’s formal system, with the goal of reaching one million signatures.
