Electricity Price Shock Looms—Bills Could Rise by Up to 10,000 kronor This Winter

Swedish households face another blow to their electricity bills as experts warn of sharply rising prices. At the same time, Sweden’s close ties to the European electricity market mean that developments abroad can have a direct impact on Swedish wallets.

Electricity prices are expected to rise sharply during the winter of 2026–2027. According to Marianne Andera, an economics expert at the energy company 1.5, says a single-family home could end up paying 5,000–10,000 kronor more. The warning stems from low water levels, the shutdown of nuclear power plants, and rising European gas prices.

– It’ll be like a perfect storm. If we also have a cold winter with little precipitation and wind, these factors will interact even more., ", Andera tells The Express.

Europe's Electricity Market Takes a Toll on Sweden

Sweden’s integration with the European electricity market means that Swedish electricity customers are affected by international conflicts and gas prices. During the first half of 2026, electricity costs rose by more than 10 percent compared with the previous year, according to Statistics Sweden (SCB). In September, the spot price reached nearly nine kronor per kilowatt-hour in southern Sweden.

The government's promise – no word yet

The government has promised a high-cost protection measure if the average electricity price exceeds 1.50 kronor per kilowatt-hour. Although this threshold has been reached in southern Sweden, there has been no announcement yet regarding the support. At the same time, households can reduce their dependence by comparing electricity plans, managing their consumption, and investing in their own electricity generation.
