Today is your chance to vote—if you live abroad. Swedes living abroad are the first to vote in the Swedish election.
There are just over 200,000 Swedes with the right to vote who live outside the country. Of these, between 70,000 and 80,000 are expected to actually cast their ballots. That corresponds to roughly the same number of votes as in a small county.
The group is described as very diverse. It includes long-term residents on Spain’s Costa del Sol, professionals in London, and others who are only staying abroad temporarily. Voter turnout is usually low.
Several political parties have targeted this voter group. The Sweden Democrats, for example, have campaigned along the Spanish coast, while the Moderates and the Green Party have been active in London.
The votes of Swedes living abroad are counted after election night and can influence the final distribution of seats. Although this group is relatively small, it can have some significance in a close election.
