Elon Musk drops a bombshell on social media. X’s entire recommendation algorithm is now ”open source,” available to everyone—and suddenly, you can check for yourself whether the platform is silencing you.
X is taking a historic step. On Thursday, it announced Elon Musk that the platform's recommendation algorithm for the "For You" feed be made open source.
”We’re making 𝕏 open source. Transparency builds trust.””, Musk wrote.
The Questions Everyone Asks
He quoted X's product manager Keith Coleman, who asked the questions many people ask themselves:
”Am I shadowbanned?"
Is X fair?
Why am I seeing this post?
”We want the public to be able to answer these questions for themselves. Today, we’re providing an unprecedented level of transparency into the X algorithm so that people can review, critique, and even help improve it. Enjoy, and please send us your feedback."
Here's the code—and the new tool
The code is now publicly available on GitHub at xai-org/x-algorithm. It includes ranking weights, filters, visibility labels, and the Grok-based Phoenix model that determines what is displayed.
At the same time, the ”Under the Hood” pilot tool is being rolled out. Users who have posted at least ten times in the past month can see which labels have limited their reach and download the data.
X describes it as an unprecedented level of transparency. The full platform code is expected to be released following a security review.
