The Swedish government wants to send Swedish soldiers to NATO in Finland. The proposal would link the Swedish military to the alliance's planning and decisions - while the war alliance is being questioned by the US.
Government proposes that up to 1,200 Swedish soldiers could be deployed in Finland as part of NATO forces.
This is the so-called forward presence, where Swedish units will be part of a multinational force and be able to operate in Finland, Sweden and Norway depending on developments.
The force is planned to consist of around 600 people in 2026, but can be rapidly expanded. At the same time, it is clear that the force will be primarily under NATO command, which means that operational decisions will be taken within the alliance structure and not only nationally.

The operation will be conducted within NATO's joint operation planning, where several countries coordinate their forces and resources.
Sweden will have the role of framework nation, with responsibility for leading and organizing parts of the force in Finland together with other countries. This means that Swedish units will be integrated into a larger military structure where decisions are taken jointly and where Sweden is part of the whole.
In an opinion piece in Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) claims Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard and Minister of Defense Pål Jonson:
”With an armed force, we contribute to taking responsibility for security and NATO's mission in Europe.”
It should also be able to transition from peacetime exercises to live tasks within the framework of NATO planning.
Rapid response - decisions already taken in advance
It is proposed that the force can be deployed quickly in the event of a change of situation, without having to take new decisions in each situation.
This means that the use of the Swedish military is in some cases already built into NATO planning. At the same time, it is clear that the force will be able to participate in the defense of other countries within the alliance, which further ties Swedish resources to common commitments.
How and when the force is used can thus be decided within a pre-determined framework.
Meanwhile: NATO is questioned by the US
The decision comes at a time when NATO is facing criticism from the US. Ahead of a meeting with Secretary General Mark Rutte, the White House has made strong statements against the alliance.
– NATO has been tried and failed, says the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, NATO has been tested and it failed.
According to Reuters, the possibility of a US withdrawal is also being discussed, putting further focus on the future of the alliance.
