The transgender child murderer is now being transferred from a women's prison to a men's prison

After a year of reports of sexual assault and a lack of safety at the women’s prison in Ystad, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service has finally taken action. Paulus, the child murderer serving a life sentence, ””Lily" Abdelshahed, who has changed his legal gender (by simply identifying as a woman), is no longer allowed to expose his penis to female inmates. He is, in fact, being sent back to a men's prison.

Paulus Abdelshahed was sentenced in 2024 to life in prison for murdering his two children. After legally changing his gender and taking the name ”Lily,” Abdelshahed was transferred in the fall of 2025 from the Tidaholm men’s prison to the Ystad women’s prison. The only ”change” in gender is what is stated in his identification documents. No physical changes involving hormones or genitalia have taken place, so this is a man who has been able to move freely in women’s areas.

There, the fellow prisoners—who are real women—, testified about indecent exposure, sexual harassment, and fear of using communal showers. Among other things, he is said to have walked around in a nightgown with his genitals fully exposed to his fellow inmates. Prison guards and the union have also sounded the alarm. But it wasn’t until the media decided it was time to draw attention to this issue that things began to happen.

The Prison and Probation Service Admits – The Audit Had an Impact

The decision was made on Tuesday, and Abdelshahed will now spend the rest of his life behind bars in a men's prison, reports The Express. Director of the Department of Correctional Services Susanne Wedin confirms that the agency has exercised its authority to grant exemptions from placement based on legal gender. She also acknowledges that media scrutiny influenced the decision.

– Based on an overall assessment, in which we must take all circumstances into account, it is clear that this review has been a factor in the overall assessment, ", she tells Expressen.

It is not clear at which facility he will now serve his sentence.

Women are being heard—but why did it take so long?

This bizarre and scandal-ridden story was made possible by the gender-change law that was forced through the Riksdag in 2024. It made it easier to change one’s legal gender and lowered the age limit for such a gender change to 16. When the scandal broke over a week ago, the very same politicians who had voted the law into effect reacted with shock and astonishment.

On Thursday, the agency's director general will Rikard Jermsten be questioned by the Parliament's Committee on Justice. In addition, a government commission is reviewing the rules governing prison placements.
