Helldén (MP) Receives a Parliamentary Salary and a Politician's Pension—At the Same Time

Daniel Helldén, the male spokesperson for the Green Party, is not only paid for his work in the Riksdag. At the same time, he continues to receive a pension from his previous political career in Stockholm. Behind this double compensation lies a pension system that entitles top politicians to substantial payments even though they are still working.

One of the Green Party's spokespersons Daniel Helldén receives 81,400 kronor per month in parliamentary compensation. But in addition to the compensation from the Riksdag, he also receives 20,766 kronor in temporary pension benefits from the City of Stockholm, as revealed by Daily News. In total, this amounts to 102,166 kronor per month in publicly funded benefits.

Nearly one mil in politicians' pensions

Helldén left Stockholm politics in 2022, but his pension payments continued. Since October of that year, he has received a total of 982,690 kronor from the City of Stockholm. His pension can continue to be paid until he turns 67, even though he is still working as a politician.

Helldén's press secretary Fredrik Elisson points out that the payments are made in accordance with the previous regulations. The pension is offset against his current income, but the system thus allows a member of Parliament who is already well-paid to simultaneously receive additional compensation from taxpayers.

M Party politicians have received over seven million

Helldén is far from the only one to benefit from these generous pension terms. A former city councilor from the Moderate Party Mikael Söderlund In September, he received 59,549 kronor in temporary pension benefits from the City of Stockholm. Since 2015, he has received a total of 7,281,829 kronor, according to a DN investigation.

The current pension agreement expired back in 2014, but politicians covered by the older system were allowed to retain their benefits. This means that former top politicians can still receive substantial tax-funded pension payments long after they have left their municipal positions.

  1. It’s so damn disgusting and repulsive that traitors like Heldeén should continue to leech off the Swedish people!! Sweden is rotten—those damned parasite politicians should be made to pay back everything they’ve taken!!
